Today, we continue getting to know Gus.
I like going out with Gus…as a friend that is. I only mention this since people, whenever they see us together, always assume we're “together” and we are definitely not. Nor have we ever been. I mean it’s pretty obvious from just looking at us since we’re entirely two different types. Not that I'm against mixed marriages, I just don't think the two of us would ever work out. While Gus is tatted, bearded, and a Brooklynite; I’m lean, clean, live in Queens, and more of a twink. Well, a 37-year-old former twink. I guess that makes me a twunk. Besides, even if Gus and I did like each other, we’ve known each other for so long now that we're well aware of all of each other’s irritating traits and believe me, Gus has a lot of them. Almost as many as I have.
My biggest pet peeve about Gus is that he likes to tell people he’s bisexual, of all things. It makes me wanna pull my hair out, or more specifically his, whenever I hear him throwing the "B" word around. I have nothing against the Kinsey 3’s and I’m not one of those people who don’t believe bisexuals exist, it’s just I’ve never believed Gus was one.
In the 10 years I've known him since we met folding plunging V necks at the Banana Republic, he’s never had a long term girlfriend. He claims to have had them, yet they always seem to magically vanish whenever called upon to appear.
I can’t really fault Gus for his big Bi charade. Gus comes from old money, and apparently with old money comes some very old-fashioned ways of thinking and some serious old school judgment. Gus knowing his family would never accept him as gay, told his parents early on that he was bisexual. Most people in his situation wouldn’t have said anything at all knowing their family were such uptight homophobes, but Gus had no choice and had to come clean after The Great Van Cortland Scandal of 1997, starring a young Gus of 17.
