Today we start off by introducing Gus.
GUS VAN CORTLAND
STATS: Scorpio, 38, kind of single, kind of versatile.
INTERESTS: Artisanal cocktails, making money, Pop art, himself.
First impressions are important, but not to Gus.
He’s the kind of guy who’s more concerned with discussing the latest craft brewery or what his next tattoo should be, rather than listening to what anyone else might have to say. I like that about Gus. What you see is what you get. He's not a bullshitter or afraid to tell you what he's thinking.
With most people nowadays you never know which version of them you’re going to end up stuck with all evening. At least with Gus, I can count on him to be true to form whenever we see each other, which isn’t that often since a little bit of Gus goes a long way.
Although Gus is admittedly his biggest fan, he isn’t totally self-absorbed. He’s completely capable of listening to other people’s opinions, but only after he’s fallen into his sixth artisanal drink of the evening. I like Gus, and I like sitting with him; his big beard and good looks draw a lot more attention to us than if I were going it solo here at The 9th Avenue Saloon.
As Gus looks around the place, I can't help but laugh since the thing he prides himself most on is being a pretty damn hip individual, “yet not one of those irritating hipsters.” It is true, Gus is indeed hip. It's just that he's more like tragically hip, as I look down the bar to find several other guys that look exactly like him.
